Dr. Lee Shumow has experience teaching in a variety of settings with a wide range of students. After working as a classroom teacher and serving as a parent educator, Shumow pursued a doctorate in educational psychology. She applies her knowledge about student learning and development in her work as an educator and in her research and writing about fostering adolescents’ school adjustment.

She is a founding member and currently serves on the Steering Committee of Northern Illinois University’s Collaborative for Early Adolescence (NIU-CEA). The NIU-CEA develops partnerships with schools and community organizations to support young adolescent learning and development.

Dr. Shumow is currently a Presidential Teaching Professor at NIU where she teaches adolescent development to both aspiring and practicing teachers. She is known for her positive attitude towards adolescents and her engaging teaching style. Dr. Shumow presents the latest research knowledge in ways that are useful and relevant for practicing educators.
